What Does It Mean That I Cannot Understand God?

This just in from our global online tribe: “Christmas reminds me that I don’t understand God and the important parts of the Christian faith. What does that mean?”

It means you are like every other Christian on the planet!

It does not come natural to trust God’s truths over our feelings.

I don’t understand artificial intelligence. I don’t understand brain surgery. And I don’t understand astrophysics. So why should I be surprised when the Trinity and God’s Sovereignty are hard to understand?

I can feel the TRINITY and fully experience its majesty. But that does not make it fully understandable. I know it exists and that it works in my life, but I do not know how it comes to be manifest.

I have experienced God’s SOVEREIGNTY in my life directly. I have felt it intervene for good and to his glory. I know God’s Sovereignty is real, but I do not know how it works.

Of course God cannot be fully explained! If he could, he would not be God. I expect to be confused and that INCREASES my faith because when I don’t understand life, I need God more than ever.

God’s sovereignty is INFINITE. Our capacity to understand life is FINITE (Philippians 4:6-7).

This is the basis for our prayers to God when we ask him to reveal his will for our life. It’s how we learn to trust him over our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5).

Not fully knowing God’s will can be accepted and respected if we turn to and trust his WORD. No matter how unclear our thoughts are on God’s purpose for our life, his promises in the Bible are always crystal clear.

I ask God to help me understand him more and more every day but accept it when I don’t.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Are you comfortable with not fully understanding God?

“Lord, I have given up my pride and turned away from my arrogance. I am not concerned with great matters or with subjects too difficult for me. Instead, I am content and at peace. As a child lies quietly in its mother’s arms, so my heart is quiet within me.” Psalm 131:1-2

Hey, like this? Why not share it with a buddy?
