The book of Proverbs is LOADED with instruction on UNDERSTANDING (Proverbs 2:11; 3:13; 14:33; 16:16).
That got me wondering…if getting understanding is so important, why can’t we lean on it?
Because life’s pain and anxiety come when we lean on our OWN understanding and think we are smarter than God.
It is INSANE to trust our woefully inadequate understanding when God’s unlimited understanding is within our grasp.
Acquiring God’s truth requires that we pay for it. God wants us to “buy” and never “sell” four things every day: Truth; Wisdom; Instruction; and Understanding.
“Get the facts at any price, and hold on tightly to all the good sense you can get.” Proverbs 23:23
Once we have these things we must never sell them to the world’s pleasures and desires. The prophet Solomon told us to never surrender these four things to anyone for anything (Proverbs 3:18; 4:13).
Of course there will be a cost in this transaction!
TRUTH costs us because the world prefers lies.
WISDOM costs us because fools believe anything.
INSTRUCTION costs us because correction is foolish unless it’s from God.
UNDERSTANDING costs us our peace because the world loves insanity.
Living with these four “purchases” is a choice that pivots off this very important question:
Do you want to be one of those believers that Solomon described in the book of Proverbs?
