The spiritual imperative of REJECTING THE WORLD is a life-long challenge and VERY DIFFICULT for Christians to achieve, right? Of course. But trying to figure out WHY that is the case makes it so much harder than it needs to be.
Fixating on the WORLD’s TRAPS that might swallow us on our faith journey is exactly what Satan wants us to think about—the world’s allure. The Enemy wants our focus to be on the reasons why we might as well give up and “join the world.”
Right now you may be thinking: “Here comes another tempted-by-the-world message.”
I get it. But please don’t bail out. I want to make a point here that we cannot get enough of on our faith walk. Here’s that point:
It’s not enough to just “fight off the world.” God wants us to do anything and everything to be wiser today than we were yesterday. He wants us to CHASE wisdom. Otherwise…
“Our thirst for happiness is INSATIABLE in this world, and if we do not have the wisdom to seek it in God, then we will find it in the world.” Proverbs 15:21
The ways people seek happiness apart from God are too many to count, but we could start with alcohol and drugs; Facebook and Instagram; lust and sex; surfing and golf; television and movies; beaches and suntans; bungie jumping and sky diving; and, of course, avocado toast.
But none of that can bring true and lasting happiness. True and lasting happiness can only be found through the lens of God’s wisdom.
We must desire wisdom with everything in our personal constitution. It must be important enough for us to seek in the divine Word of God and pray for every day like Solomon (2 Chronicles 1:10); Daniel (Daniel 2:30); Paul (Colossians 1:9); and James (James 1:5).
Don’t panic. This is not an “overnight flip of the switch.” God is patient with us. He is looking for our commitment to move toward what he commands. Are you headed in that direction right now?
I ask God to strengthen me to seek out his wisdom and use that door to find happiness. To help me fight off the temptation to anchor my hopes and dreams and actions in the world.
