The world’s soundtrack keeps getting louder and louder as it plays out on a Smartphone billboard conveying messages along an assembly line destined to capture our attention.
The result?
God has more “attention competition” than ever before.
All of us are at risk. Many of us are becoming increasingly less attentive. Some of us have Spiritual Attention Deficit Disorder.
What starts out as a coping mechanism to deal with an endless stream of stimuli turns into laziness that compromises our relationship with God.
We cannot hear what God wants to tell us if we’re not paying attention. We cannot process God’s truths if we’re not paying attention. And we cannot do what God directs us to do if we’re not paying attention.
The bottom-line is clear–we will fix our attention on something. So the question is who and what will have our ear, mind, eyes, and heart. Where will we INVEST our attention?
In order to answer that question, we must refill our attention tank. Once we have increased our capacity to pay attention, we need to reassign it to GOD!
The goal is to go well beyond just tuning out the cacophony of communication content and give God our new capacity to pay attention.
Each day is another, fresh chance to re-rack and reassign our attention.
We may have created a large attention gap by drifting away, but we can drift back. We cannot close that gap in one leap, but we can reach that goal if we make a commitment to be diligent about taking a series of baby steps.
It’s definitely worth it!
I ask God to give me the strength to pay attention to him FIRST and always.
WHAT ABOUT YOU?
To what are you giving your attention? What’s on your screen? Who’s in your ear? What’s on your heart?
“We must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.” Hebrews 2:1
