The headline above–“Fear God? I Thought I Was Supposed To Love God”–is a verbatim thought that circulated through my mind just after accepting Christ as a 22-year old college student.
The notion of “fearing God” has always been, and still is now, one of the most misunderstood parts of walking with Christ.
But here’s the bottom line for me now…
The only way to fear NOTHING in life (Love God Fear Nothing) is to fear God with reverential awe in his presence and greatness (1 Samuel 12:14). To know that the Lord sees everything we think, say, and do. And to know that Godly wisdom is viewing life through his lens and responding as he would have us respond.
“To be wise you must first have reverence for the LORD. If you know the Holy One, you have understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 GNT
The wisdom to love God and fear nothing of this world will be forever elusive if we build our own God–like we were atBuild-A-Bear with the kids–as some kind warm and fuzzy friend to make us comfortable and bless us with what we want.
Worshiping the world’s wisdom views God through the false lens of fear and distrust. The result is a blurring of goodness and the introduction of worry and anger. And anything that subverts goodness and holiness is not from God.
I ask God to help me push through the reality that fearing him will make the world UNEASY. To assure me that it’s ok and part of his majestic mosaic. To slow me down and focus on him.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Have you feared God today?
