I was mesmerized over the past couple of weeks watching Olympic ski jumpers soar off a skyscraper ramp like rockets into the damp South Korean air.
It made me wonder how they must have felt during their first visit to a ski jump event. Watching humans fly down a frozen mountainside must have surely produced fear and trepidation.
I learned with a couple of keystrokes that they are terrified on that first day and on every jump they make when a glint of light illuminates the landing zone far below.
How do they get their courage?
It starts on dry land well before they strap themselves to a pair of skis. It then progresses to practice jumps off a small ramp into ever-larger pools of water on their way to little jumps on the snow and finally to runs down a full-size ramp.
It’s just like that for followers of Jesus.
We experience the same feeling in our own “life gate” as we watch challenge after challenge careen our way. Words like daunting, risky, and scary move to the front our mind’s queue and tell us “it is just impossible to make that jump.”
The last thing we want to do is jump toward God without a sense of guaranteed safety.
But God says, “C’mon, jump. You’ve got this…and I’ve got you.”
I ask God to help me make a 100% commitment to depend on his grace in all things. To show his love in my love for others. To bless my service to his Kingdom.
