Consumed By Constant Cravings

Needing “THINGS” to be content is a trap because the need never stops asking for more. There is never enough pay-off. The cravings never end.

We think having more and more will equate directly to our happiness level. But there is never enough. This is a vicious cycle because those cravings actually increase over time as we come up short in our quest for happiness in order to “get ahead.”

The notion of CRAVINGS is carved into the bedrock of our society and animates a pervasive societal trend accepting their inevitability in life. We see the evidence in song lyrics where the phrase “Constant Cravings” has been used countless times by artists like Beyonce, kd Lang, Seal, Dwight Yoakam, Shawn Mendes, and Stone Temple Pilots…just to name a few.

Any of those songs could have been an anthem for the early part of my faith walk.

I was living for more…and more…and still more. MY “more” may have been mansions and sports cars and watches, but that is not my point. YOUR “more” may be something else, most likely is. And it may not even be something tangible you can touch or experience. In fact, it could be in your thoughts, your heart, your eyes, or your motives just as easily as in vacations, clothes, or a boat.

God brought me around with this bottom line: Anything that disrupts being content with, and present in, what we have and what we feel can be a craving—our “more.”

“And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” Ecclesiastes 4:4

The Lord knows our heart and how we think very well. We need to summon his strength to knock down our cravings for more when they show up and make their urgent demand on our soul.

What are you craving? I’ll bet you can find something even if you have to dig deep. Any luck?

Hey, like this? Why not share it with a buddy?
