It’s true! I actually lived out this famous malaprop from baseball legend Yogi Berra early in my faith walk and the consequences from freezing at the fork were horrific.
My indecision at the fork was tantamount to making the wrong choice because it guaranteed that I would not take God’s choice. Bad choice at the fork means bad consequences down that road.
I lived that nightmare for many years before fully committing my life to Christ. But all of that changed when God taught me that playing boss and not obeying Christ was wrong and puts us at a fork in the road. If we’re playing God, we’ll either freeze at the fork or make the wrong choice and pay the price later down the road.
When life produces forks in the road on our spiritual journey, he wants us to choose his road and turn away from our own road which lures us with money and success and worldly activities.
When we roll up on forks in the road of life, we must believe God’s protection promise:
“The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:7-8
The Lord wants us to pray for that promise to be with us at each fork we encounter. He wants us to pray for protection in advance as we pull out of the garage each day with God driving our car. He wants us to pray in advance for protection on every part of our life, including health, family, church and business relationships, finances, our future, our hope—the whole ball of wax.
When Moses told the nation of Israel he was no longer able to lead them, because of his advanced age, Joshua rose up. Moses said:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
God wants us to give him our fears, worries, and doubts at each fork in the road we hit. Give it a try.
