“There are so many things to do in the Christmas season that I am wound up like the toy I just bought my son. How can I find peace?”
This great question has been asked for decades. The most common answer looks like this: “Just Remember That Jesus Is The Reason For The Season.”
CORRECT! But that’s a partial answer.
Yes, Christmas is about the birth of Christ. The arrival of the prophesied Messiah. The Lord in human flesh.
But if the arrival of Jesus is the only basis for this holiday, we will be living the world’s Christmas.
Jesus most certainly came to be with us. But what the world leaves out of the Jesus Is The Reason For The Season mantra is that he came to SAVE US for eternity. To let us experience joy while we’re on earth. To give us the gift of living with purpose beyond what the world puts on display at Christmas.
Getting this wrong has drastic consequences. It is IMPOSSIBLE to play the world’s Christmas game AND maintain our focus on the full array of God’s gifts mentioned above.
Christmas is not the TERMINUS of our discomfort. Christmas is the ORIGIN of our joy. It is the pipe that delivers our connection to the Lord of Heaven and earth so we can depend on him, serve him, and glorify him for all to see.
That’s why we have Christmas. To make all of that possible so others will come to him, too. That their example and glorification of Christ will attract others. That this cycle of incredible hope will never stop.
I ask God: Keep me grounded in you this month, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
