Like millions of Christians around the globe, I was stunned beyond comprehension when a troupe of drag queens performed during the opening ceremony for the Olympics in Paris last Friday. This was blatant mockery of Jesus Christ and it’s WRONG.
The Olympic Organizing Committee apparently decided to put a modern twist on Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic “The Last Supper.” This version featured LGBTQ+ icon Barbara Butch and drag performers. The intent was to promote inclusivity and community tolerance, but it ended up sparking a significant backlash, especially among Christian conservatives and religious leaders around the world.
THE REACTION
The response was swift and loud. Tim Wildmon, the president of the American Family Association, didn’t hold back. He called the act a blatant sign of disrespect towards Jesus Christ. Wildmon pointed out what he sees as a double standard: offenses against Christians often get less attention and outrage compared to those against other groups. Many conservative voices echoed this sentiment, viewing the performance as part of a broader cultural trend that’s eroding respect for religious beliefs.
THE APOLOGY
In light of the uproar, the Paris Olympics organizers quickly issued an apology. They stressed that their goal was never to offend but to celebrate diversity and love. Anne Descamps, a spokesperson for Paris 2024, emphasized the message of inclusion. However, despite the apology, the segment was pulled from official Olympic channels, highlighting just how deep the act had cut into Christianity.
