“I’ve Got This!”
That line shows incredible hubris, right? Yep. But that’s how I looked at spiritual maturity early in my faith walk when I tried to turn a superficial understanding into my “permanent” relationship with Christ. When it failed, I called on my professional success and money to soothe the pain of living without God. The results were ugly.
The minute we think “I’ve Got This,” God tells us that spiritual maturity is all about Jesus But we have to be listening. And I wasn’t.
Spiritual maturity for Christians is not about elevating ourselves. It is about glorifying God and being an OBEDIENT follower, not just an observer.
But that’s only the beginning of the process. We cannot grow our faith without intentional action. That’s why the Bible tells us to SEEK God.
“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.” Isaiah 55:6
Seeking God is a CONTINUAL PROCESS that must never stop. It is a matter of “setting our minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2).
Fixing our mind on Jesus is a deliberate and intentional commitment to seal the truth—that spiritual maturity is all about Jesus—into our soul and stitch it to our heart. Here’s how the Apostle Paul approached it in Thessalonica:
“May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.” 2 Thessalonians 3:5
The truth is, we never “arrive” in our spiritual walk until we stand face to face with Jesus. Until then, we must remain vigilant, recognizing that our spiritual growth requires both the grace of God and our own active pursuit of his presence.
The enemy loves nothing more than a complacent Christian, someone who thinks “I’ve Got This” and has everything figured out. But Scripture reminds us to stay humble, to keep seeking, and to keep leaning on God’s understanding, not our own.
Surrendering to God’s will in this way is not a one-time event. It’s a daily, sometimes hourly, act of laying down our pride, our plans, and our desires at his feet. We need to trust him in all areas of our lives, even when it’s hard, even when we think “I’ve Got This.”
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
That’s why I ask God to help gird me for the battle against thinking “I’ve Got This” when it comes to my relationship with him. And to never lose sight of the truth that spiritual maturity is ALL ABOUT JESUS.
