This just in from our global online tribe:
There are so many things to do in the Christmas season that I am wound up like the toys I just bought my kids. HOW CAN I FIND COMFORT THIS CHRISTMAS?”
Let’s start with the FOUNDATION of Christmas before we get to COMFORT.
Christmas is about the birth of Christ—the arrival of the prophesied Messiah, the Lord in human flesh, and the promise of HOPE for the world. It’s a divine story, not just a holiday.
God uses Christmas to shine a spotlight on that hope so others can see and come to Christ through our example. Now, about the question’s reference to “finding comfort in Christmas…”
Yes, there’s temporary comfort in the world’s Christmas trappings. Family, food, gifts, and fellowship. Sights, sounds, and smells. Gifts, gatherings, and gingerbread houses. Candles, carolers, and cookies. But the enduring FOUNDATION of Christmas is Christ. He is the origin of our COMFORT and JOY.
Comfort Beyond the World’s Reach
Real comfort can ONLY be found in Christ and what he has done—and continues to do—for us, every day. That truth challenges us to depend on him and glorify his name during this sacred season.
This isn’t about rejecting the joys of the season but prioritizing Christ above all. We should savor Christ’s comfort in Christmas without letting the world’s version of the holiday outshine the CHILD and ESSENCE of CHRISTMAS.
From “Wound Up” to “Be Still”
The pressures of the season often leave us wound up, missing the quiet wonder of God’s presence. Here’s God’s answer, spoken through David: “Be still, and know that I am God…” Psalm 46:10. Amid the rush, this verse calls us to pause. In stillness, we encounter God’s sovereignty, which grounds us when life spirals into stress.
Staying Grounded
Here are three ways to move beyond the world’s comfort this Christmas:
SIMPLIFY: Trim the chaos from your schedule. Focus on meaningful traditions that honor Christ and connect you with loved ones.
SERVE: Comfort comes alive when we reflect God’s love outward. Find someone to bless with your time, resources, or encouragement.
SURRENDER: Give your worries to God and let him refocus your heart on Christ’s birth and the promises it fulfills.
What About You?
Have you moved your thoughts this Christmas beyond the world’s version of COMFORT to God’s promises through CHRIST?
“Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11
As you prepare for Christmas, remember that HE is not just the reason for the season—HE is the source of eternal joy.
