There are many spots on Mt. Everest where there is only one place—one specific, precise spot—where the climber’s primary anchor in the layers of redundant protection MUST be placed. Deviation of any kind will put the climber at risk to a range of horrible outcomes ranging from discomfort to serious injury to death.
Our faith walk requires the same precision when it comes to our anchor in life. I know from personal and agonizing experience that anchoring to anything in life but God is a losing proposition with zero margin for error.
My anchor was making money to achieve worldly success and acquire all of its “glorious” trappings. Each revolution of the strive-and-stress carousel generated additional tension in every single part of my life and every role I played—husband, father, pastor and friend…all of them.
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf…” Hebrews 6:19-20
