There are millions of Christians around the world working in jobs they would never freely choose. Why in the world would they do that? Because “there are bills to pay.”
The consequence of that choice leads people to work for man’s approval and reject God’s affirmation.
Some of them mistakenly THINK they are toiling for God’s approval by “doing a good job” and “striving for excellence.” But teachers, doctors, scientists, firefighters and police officers create excellence every day while rejecting God along the way.
That is very sad because the only sustainable praise we can receive comes from God. Human approval cannot be sustained. On the other hand, we can get through the pain of man’s rejection if we look to Christ for our approval at work.
Working for God’s approval does not mean we are forced to abandon our dreams and aspirations. God wants us to dream and reach and aspire as long as our focus is on proclaiming God, not shining a self-aggrandizing light on us.
The goal is to allow others to experience God’s glory through the footprint we leave at work.
When we PROCLAIM CHRIST and SUBORDINATE SELF in this way, we are immediately transported to a rarely-experienced zone of freedom.
That freedom comes when we view God as our boss. It gets better. God is a boss that cannot fire us! If we pull this off, we can tell people about God when they ask us about our boss at work.
We never have to pretend we are satisfied in our job because our satisfaction does NOT come from our job. It comes from God.
For me, I want my work to be based on the goal of treasure in Heaven and not rewards on earth.
